The Wonder of Birds

Birds have had an impact on human society through the ages. From the use of bird imagery in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, to the more recent cooperative relationship between Africans and Honeyguides, birds have a unique and essential impact on human life. Their migrations spread seeds to proliferate plant life across continents, and certain species, like hummingbirds, hold essential roles in pollination. As humans, we should make it a priority to support their lives and ecosystems.

Billions of birds flock across the United States every spring in migration to different climes. In fact, more than 350 species of Neotropical birds travel across both North and South America each year. In recent history, human activity and climate change have decimated their natural habitats making their migration more difficult.

In an effort to counteract this habitat disruption and degradation and restore the migratory bird population, a bipartisan group of U.S. Senators has advanced new legislation, titled “the Migratory Birds of the Americas Conservation Enhancements Act”. This would uphold and expand an existing program with impact in countries throughout the Americas, as well as a majority of the United States. In the words of Felice Stadler, the vice president of government affairs for the National Audubon Society, “The Migratory Birds of the Americas Conservation Enhancements Act is a straightforward and cost-effective way for the United States to build partnerships throughout the hemisphere to protect birds wherever they fly.”
